THE BLACK MANTLE
~
Death of Miss Catherine Anne Hansen
~
The black mantle hangs over the residence of Mr. Nicholas Hansen, of the firm of Hansen & Linehan, and inside there are beareved and sorrowful hearts, the crown jewel of their former happy home has been taken away by the unrelenting hand of Death. At 8:30 o’clock last (Friday) evening, Katie, Mr. and Mrs. Hansen’s only daughter, closed her eyes to all that is mortal on earth. Her deathbed was surrounded by her parents and friends, and in spite of all they could do, her spirit passed away to its eternal home, leaving beareved and loved one to mourn over her death.

Catherine Anne Hansen was a native of this city, and but twenty years of age. She had been, up last spring, an attentive and conscious student constantly attending, first, St. Mary’s German Parochial school, and, during the last three years, St. Joseph’s Academy, where she was one of the brightest scholars. Her future was fraught with bright anticipation, and her parents looked forward to an hour when their accomplished and amiable daughter would become their solace in domestic happiness. But the decree of providence are beyond human control. Her life was taken away in the flower of its youth. The cause of her death was quick consumption, and when Mr. Hansen discovered that his child was slowly but surely approaching dissolution he planned a trip to New Orleans, Florida, Cuba and to Europe – wherever it was thought that the climate would benefit her. Tickets were purchased, all preparations made, and a carriage at the door to convey the family to the train. Katie walked to the threshold, but the thought that she was going away, perhaps to die, overcame her, and she fainted in the arms of her father. The trip was abandoned. She returned to her couch, and from that moment the fell disease renewed its grasp, tenaciously clinging to her young life, until the vital spark ceased to glow.

Mr. and Mrs. Hansen are sorely bereaved, and in the affliction they have the sympathy of the entire community.

The remains will be conveyed to the German Catholic Cemetery Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock.
