Obituary
~
T. Palmer Root was born in Elmira, N. Y., July 31, 1840, making him thirty-nine years old at the time of his death. When he was quite young, his father moved to the town of Alabama, Genesse County, New York. T. P. Rood was educated at Carey Seminary, Careyville, Genesse County. Several citizens who reside in Dubuque were schoolmates of his at the institution. After he left school he studied law with Senator Kernan, of New York, at admitted to the bar at the age of 21 years old. He came to Dubuque about twenty years ago, and became a law partner in the firm of Allison, Crane & Rood, afterward Crane & Rood. For some four years he was a member of the firm of Cooley & Rood.

When the war broke out he entered the service as lieutenant in Capt. D. C. Cram’s Co., 6th Iowa Calvary, and served with his regiment under Gen. Sully on the frontier. Receiving a severe gun shot wound, he left his command and was commissioned captain and assistant division quarter master in Gen. Thomas’ corps, under Gen. Couch. He served during the war with credit and enthusiasm being a brave and gallant solider.

Mr. Rood had many friends in Dubuque, genial manner made him popular with the community, and is regretted by all. It appears that he, in a measure, inherited his melancholy disposition. It is stated by his family that his father was given to fits of melancholy that lasted for weeks at a time. He is now living in New York state. He was a lawyer in early life, but health failing he retired to a farm. At times, when the corp failed, another ill luck befel him, a fit of melancholy would possess him.

The mother of deceased is also living. T. P. Rood lives a wife and one child – a son who has the sympathy of the entire community. His wife was the daughter of Mr. Bartlett, an old citizen of Dubuque that died several years ago. Mrs. Tisdale and Mrs. Hollingsworth are sisters of Mr. Rood. The husband of Mrs. Tisdale met with a tragic death in Chicago, the particulars of which were published in the HERALD at the time it happened. Mr. Rood was a member of four different secret societies, in each of which he had an insurance policy. In Dubuque Lodge No. 9, A. O. U. W., he held a policy for $2,000; one for $2,000 in the Knights of Honor; one for $3,000 in the Knights of Pythias; and one for $2,000 in Iowa Legion of Honor. He was also a member of the Veterans Corp.

This sad affair has cast a deep gloom in the family. It is more distressing on account of the very feeble condition of his wife’s mother who is not expected to live. Surely the bereaved family need sympathy and kind friends are doing all in their power to lighten their sorrowing hearts.

The remains of the deceased will be buried in Linwood at 2 o’clock today from the family residence.
