Dubuque Herald – May 29, 1875

Morris Boland, mate of the Josie, died yesterday at the age of 23. He was conveyed home sick on the last trip of the boat a week ago and was incurable, lingering along until yesterday. He will be buried Sunday at 2 p.m. from his brother’s residence on Southern Avenue.

DEATH OF MAURICE BOLAND
Maurice Boland, a young man, long known and respected in this community died yesterday morning, after a painful illness. The deceased had for some time been employed as a mate on the steamer Josie ever conducting himself and discharging his various duties so as to command the esteem and confidence of his associates and employers. Mr. Boland was summoned to his final accounts in the very flush of manhood, and when life seemed filled with new hopes and aspirations. His death is lamented by a large number of friends, who will extend their heart-felt sympathies to the bereaved and sorrowing relatives.
