Dubuque Herald, Jan. 3, 1862

A MAN KILLED BY A FALL. – On New Year’s Eve, Coroner Liest held an inquest on the body of Mr. Bernard Scherrer, a German, aged 57 years, a resident of this city. Mr. Scherrer was standing at the top, or ascending a flight of four or five steps from the street to Mr. Duttle’s Bakery on Clay, between Tenth and Eleventh Streets. He stumbled and fell to the sidewalk, striking his head against something which penetrated his skull between the eyebrows, causing the brain to protrude through the wound. He died in a few minutes. It is believed he had no family.
