Died of Wounds at Chicago

Lawrence Donovan, Formerly of Garry Owen, Stabbed in Chicago by Negro

Lawrence (Larry) Donovan, 32, world war veteran and former resident of Dubuque and Garry Owen, died in Chicago, Wednesday morning, April 4th, at 11 o'clock from wounds received Dec. 8, 1927, when he was stabbed by a negro employee of a Chicago packing plant, who had been discharged by Mr. Donovan, a foreman in the plant.

The victim of the colored packing house workman had been employed for the past five years as foreman for the Western Packing company at Chicago. During his work Dec. 8, he had occasion to discharge one of the colored men working under him. When he left the packing plant that evening the colored man, who had been lying in wait, stabbed Donovan several times before the former Dubuquer, possessed of great physical strength, overpowered him. Donovan was taken to St. Luke's hospital where he died Wednesday. Frequently since the stabbing it was thought that Mr. Donovan had a chance for recovery, but recently his relatives and friends learned that his physicians had given up all hope.

Born in Garry Owen, Mr. Dovovan lived the greater part of his life in Dubuque. He served overseas in the world war and previous to his going to Chicago he was employed as a foreman at the Corn Belt Packing company in Dubuque.

He is survived by his wife, Edna (Utiz) Donovan, of Chicago; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Donovan, one brother, Augustine, and a sister, Mrs. Francis Mathingly, all of Dubuque.

A brother preceded him in death six months ago.
