Jacob Miller, Prominent Dubuque County Resident Expires in Los Angeles

A telegram has been received here announcing the death on Wednesday in Los Angeles of Mr. Jacob R. Miller, one of the very best known residents of Dubuque county.

Mr. and Mrs. Miller were in the west on a leisure trip, and as no prior news of his illness had been received by relatives here, the word of his death came as a terrible shock.

The Miller homestead lies just beyond Center Grove and is known as Fairview Farm. Two weeks ago, Mr. and Mrs. Miller departed for the west, expecting to remain for three months, and from the missives received from them up to Wednesday, they were having a happy time.

Whether death was due to sudden illness or to an accident is not known, as no details were conveyed in the telegram which brought the sorrowful tidings. Even after the death message came, a post-card was received from the couple by relatives, the word being that they were in good health and getting much pleasure out of the trip.

The deceased is survived by nine children, as follows: William, Ella, George, Laura, Anna, Walter and Edwin, of the homestead, and Rudolph and Clifford of Lewistown, Montana. Also he leaves one sister, Miss Anna Miller, of this county, and a niece and a nephew, Mrs. Will Buckingham and Mr. John Miller, of this city.

Mr. Miller was born in Switzerland about seventy years ago. In the prime of life, he came to this county, and for a great many years past he has been a resident of this county.

The deceased was undoubtedly one of the most widely known and most highly esteemed men of the entire countryside, having been the head of a large family of children, every one of whom was reared to become a deep credit to the parents.

A man kindly and generous, his friends are unnumbered. He was ever an honorable man and a helpful neighbor, and the grief which prevails upon the news of his sudden passing is widespread, not only throughout the country, but in Dubuque as well.

The funeral arrangements have not as yet been made. Members of the family will go part of the way to meet the remains, which are being brought back by the grief-stricken wife.

The son Rudolph, of Lewistown, is here on a visit at the homestead. He was to start for New York on Wednesday night, and was to have brought home his sister Anna, who is visiting in Boston.

On Thursday another message was received from Los Angeles stating that Mr. Miller died as the result of an attack of heart failure, his final illness having lasted only a few hours. Death came at the home of Mrs. Miller's sister, Mrs. Cook, who is accompanying Mrs. Miller home with the body. They will reach Clinton on Monday morning next, and there they will be met by relatives from here.

Members of the family state that Mr. Miller never before, to their knowledge, was troubled with heart affliction.

Correction notes:
The death notice from the Los Angeles Herald gave incorrect information about his Civil War regiment (Co. C, 21st IA is incorrect).

Jacob R. Miller actually served in Co. A, 46th Iowa Infantry. The Roster & Record (1911), Co. A, 46th Inf. lists Jacob R. Miller, enlisted from Dubuque on 5/16/1864 and mustered out 9/23/1864.

Invalid pension filed May 23, 1904. Widow pension filed Sept 26, 1910 (Fold-3 website).

The History of Dubuque County (Western Historical Co., 1880) has a biography for J.R. Miller, stating .... "his brother, John W., was killed in the charge on Vicksburg" and "Mr. M. was a member of Co. A, 46th I.V.I."

Jacob's brother John, who died at Vicksburg was in Co. C, 21st IA. How John's regiment info. made it's way into Jacob's Los Angeles newspaper death notice is unknown.
