Dubuque lost one of its real pioneers Friday night, when John McEvoy died at 7 o’clock at Mercy Hospital. Death was due to infirmities of old age, from which Mr. McEvoy had been suffering for the last seven months.

John McEvoy was born in Down County, Ireland eighty-three years ago, the son of Patrick and Mary McEvoy. When he was eighteen years of age he came with his parents to this country, coming direct to Dubuque where they settled and where the family has resided ever since. Mr. McEvoy learned the masonry and contracting trade and was successfully engaged in that business until ten years ago when he retired.

In 1863 he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Carrott, the ceremony being performed at the Cathedral. To this union eight children were born who with the exception of one daughter and one son who died several years ago survive him.
They are: J. W., Mrs. Elizabeth Bilderback, Mrs. Charles Stevenson, Edward, Charles, and Mrs. William Kinsella, and Dr. E. A., all of this city. One brother Edward, of Doherty, Ia., and one sister, Mrs. Ella O’Meara of Dubuque, also survive. Mrs. McEvoy preceded her husband two years ago last May

All his life a devout Catholic, he was possessed of those Christian values and kindly traits which make him a valued friend to those who knew him. He was a good citizen and for six years Mr. McEvoy was a township trustee.

The funeral will be held on Monday morning at 9 o’clock from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Stevenson, 617 Dodge Street, to St. Columbkille’s Church. Burial will take place in Mt. Olivet.
