Mrs. Violet U. Akins, 89, of Sunnycrest Manor Nursing Home, 2375 Roosevelt St., formerly of 2768 New Haven St., died at 9:50 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at Sunnycrest Manor.

Private family services will be held Thursday in Mueller Memorial Chapel at Linwood Cemetery. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. There will be no public visitation. Private family visitation will be held prior to services on Thursday. The Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on July 2, 1911, in Dubuque, daughter of John and Violet (Sharp) McKeown.

She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Gloria (Carl) Jacobson, of Darlington, Wis., Rita Hicks, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Mary Lou Morton, of Rockford, Ill.; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, John H. Morton; her second husband, Clifford Akins; two sons, Wayne "Buddy" Morton and James Morton; a daughter, Darlene Nauman; a sister; a brother; a granddaughter; and a grandson.

The family requests no flowers.
