FARLEY, Iowa - Lawrence L. "Peanuts" Ahlers, 73, of 6010 Comer Road, Farley, passed away peacefully at 8:50 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2011, at his family farm, with his family by his side.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 4, at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Cascade, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cascade. Friends may call from 2 to

8 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

He was born on March 27, 1938, in Farley, son of Lawrence and Edna (Klein) Ahlers. He is a graduate of St. Joseph's High School in Farley.

He married Mary M. Merfeld on July 29, 1958, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Cascade; she preceded him in death on Oct. 31, 2002.

He was a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade.

Throughout Larry's life, he worked for Flynn Ready Mix, Simon Feed Store and farmed.

He enjoyed every aspect of his life. He liked to work on the farm, chatting with family, collecting knives and playing games on the computer. He really enjoyed shooting the shit with people from all over the world. In the last year, he really enjoyed making the grocery list.

Surviving are three sons, Kevin (Lisa) Ahlers, of Cascade, Norbert (Edna Scherbring) Ahlers, of Farley, and Jerry Ahlers, of Dubuque; eight grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; his siblings, Carey (Darlene) Ahlers, of Worthington, and Mercile Pins, of Cascade; brothers-in-law, Joseph (Dodi) Merfeld Jr., of Cascade, Carl Merfeld, of Monticello, Louis (Gladys) Merfeld, of Dubuque, and Allan (Beverly) Merfeld, of Rockford, Ill.; sisters-in-law, Rose Marie Oswald, of Monticello, Annabelle (Gerald) Gudenkauf, of Delhi, Theresa Drew, of Cascade, Cheryl Merfeld, of Garden Prairie, Ill., and Gerri Merfeld, of Benton Harbor, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Janice Geers; his father- and mother-in-law, Joseph and Mary Merfeld Sr.; a sister-in-law, Peggy Merfeld; and brothers-in-law, Laverne Pins, Earl Oswald, Ralph Drew, Robert Merfeld and Frances Merfeld.

A Lawrence Ahlers Memorial Fund has been established.
