Vernon P. Fitzgibbons, 86, of 1358 Locust St., passed away at 2:55 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, surrounded by his family.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery. To celebrate Vernon's life, friends may call after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

He was born on May 16, 1927, in Dubuque, son of George and Leona (Kieffer) Fitzgibbons. Vern served with the Army.

He was a very good mechanic. He always had requests for his help. Vern drove stock cars for many years in Dubuque. He was a very social person and enjoyed spending time with his many friends and

family. Vern also enjoyed going to farmers market. He was a very independent person.

Surviving are his children, Kathy Patch and Kim Bradley, both of Dubuque, and Danny "Fred" (Mary Lou) Fitzgibbons, of East Dubuque, Ill.; six grandchildren, Jer (Tara Dolan) Randall, Mandy Randall, Danny (Jessie) Fitzgibbons, Cassie (John Keil) Fitzgibbons, Jessie (fiance, Mike Theisen) Fitzgibbons and Alex Burrows; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Allen (Jane) Fitzgibbons, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George Jr. and Richard Fitzgibbons; and a great-great-grandson, Bentley Randall

A Vernon P. Fitzgibbons Memorial Fund has been established.
