John Joseph Beireis, 72, of Dubuque, passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at home.

Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2014, at Holy Family Church New Melleray, with the Rev. Michael Podhajsky officiating. Burial will follow in the church Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, December 8, 2014, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

John Joseph Beireis was born September 22, 1942, the son of Chester and Veralda (Soppe) Beireis. He married Janet Ann "Jan" Kane on January 28, 1967.

John graduated from Dubuque Senior High School and entered the United States Air Force, serving from 1961 to 1965.

John worked as a commercial roofer in Minnesota for many years and was a member of the Roofer's Local 96 for 46 years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 602 out of Hillman, MN. When he retired, John and Jan sold their home and retired to the Platte Lake near Hillman, MN. In June of 2014, they moved back to Dubuque due to John's declining health.

John is survived by his wife Jan, of 47 plus years; his sister, Phyllis (Don) Miller, of East Dubuque, IL; brothers, David and Bob Beireis, of Dubuque, and Dale Beireis, of Nevis, MN; brothers and sisters-in-law, Daniel (Cheryl) Kane, of Galena, IL, Mike (Margie) Kane, of Epworth, IA, Marty (Cindy) Kane, of Ringsted, IA, Bill (Mary Kay) Kane, of Zwingle, IA, Jay Kiernan, of Dubuque, IA., Shirley (Glenn) Sieverding, of Bellevue, IA, Joyce Haudenshield and Marie (Jim) Balk, of Dubuque, IA, and Linda (Clarence) Hoftender, of Galena IL.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William C Beireis Jr.; his mother and father-in-law, Joseph and Angela Kane; sisters-in-law, Carol (Carrie) Beireis, Loretta Beireis, Jessie Beireis and Mary Jo (Kane) Kiernan; and brother-in-law, James Haudenshield.
