James W. Shetler 1940-2013

James W. Shetler, 73, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa, formerly of Dubuque, passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family and passed in the comfort of his home.

Funeral services and a memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 422 E. 10th Street, Davenport, Iowa. Burial will be Sunday, Nov. 24, in Holy Family Cemetery, Peosta, Iowa. The family will greet friends on Friday, Nov. 22, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main St., downtown Davenport. There will be a prayer service offered at 7 p.m., which all are encouraged to attend. Following Jim's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.

James William Shetler was born on Aug. 6, 1940, in Dubuque, a son of Lester W. and Frances I. (McCann) Shetler. He graduated from Loras College in 1970, 12 years after completing high school at Loras Academy. James spent the remainder of his working career in the human resource administration/labor relations field.

He was united in marriage to Patricia Anne Kane on Nov. 11, 1961, in Dubuque. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage.

The major focus of his life was the well-being of his family. He enjoyed reading, music, travel, sports and physical fitness activities.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Patricia; their four children and spouses, Laura and Mario DeMarco, of Des Moines, Leslie and Daniel Corlett, of Davenport, Michael and Wendy Shetler, of Las Vegas, and Linda and Scott Horn, of Bradenton, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Dino, Alexandra and Leah DeMarco, Erica (Paul) Scully, Connor, Andrew and Anna Corlett, Payton and Ethan Horn; and a sister, Ruth Willis, of Dubuque.

Memorials can be made to Genesis VNA Hospice or American Cancer Society.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ertmer.
