DAVID C GREER
Birth: Jul. 18, 1842 Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Death: Jul. 8, 1913, Curlew, Palo Alto County
Iowa, USA

DEATH OF A PIONEER

David G. Grier, one of the pioneers of Palo Alto county, passed away at his home in Curlew Tuesday afternoon, July 8, at 4:30. He appeared to be well and hearty for a man of his age until a week ago Tuesday, when he was stricken with a paralytic stroke after which his strength gradually weakened until death claimed him.

The funeral services were at the M. E. Church in Curlew Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Wm. Figge. Interment made in the Rush Lake cemetery. The pall bearers were Andrew Gross, Geo. Tressler, Chas. Patterson, Fred Cross, William Coakley and Mr. Glenn.

Mr. Grier was born in Montreal Canada July 18, 1842. He settled in Palo Alto county in the year 1869, subsequently residing in this locality.

In the year of 1871 he was united in marriage to Mary Anna Durston at Rolfe Iowa. Besides the wife there are three daughters and four sons to mourn the loss of a kind loving father. Geo. Grier resides at Sacramento, Cal., Wallace at Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs Chas. Bonerake at Johnston N. D. and Lilly, Mayme, Chas. and Arthur are at home. One daughter, Mrs. James McCrary, died thirteen years ago.

No man in our county lead a more exemplary life than did Mr. Grier. He was humble and mild of manner and he was scrupulously honest. He would not intentionally do anyone an injustice and he was very slow to criticise those who might have wrong him. He was kind, obliging, patient and cheerful.

He took a homestead northwest of this city over forty years ago, and one who can stand in the same neighborhood for that length of time the ordinary test to which he is subjected and maintain successfully the high regard of those who knew him does not need a tribute from the pen of anyone to add to the reputation that he has made as a resident of our community.

The Independent joins thousands in extending sincere sympathy to the wife and children in the loss they have sustained - Mallard Independent.
