Rev Johann Heinrich "Henry" Vogel, Sr

Birth: Apr. 2, 1842
Death: Jun. 7, 1910

Rev. H. Vogel

In last week's issue we mentioned in a few short words the death of Rev. H. Vogel, which occurred last Tuesday afternoon, a few minutes before 5 o'clock. Death followed a protracted and painful illness which had prevented the reverend gentleman, for the last months, from filling the pulpit and ministering to the spritiual needs of his flock. All through the city and county the sad news was heard with deep regrets, for the deceased was not only loved by the members of his congregation, but had the highest esteem and respect of the whole community, of everybody that had had occasion to become acquainted with him.

For a period of twenty-nine years he served St. John's Congregation with faithfulness and devotion, never shirking his duty, as he saw it, ever ready to help and assist with kind words, good advice and more substantial gifts. If there can be any comfort to the bereaved family, it is the thought that all that have known him sympathize with them in their hour of sorrow.

Rev. Hy Vogel was born April 2, 1842, at Hof, Bavaria, and came to this country with his parents in 1855, where they made their home in Dubuque, Iowa. There he entered the college of the Iowa Synod and after graduation continued his studies in the theological seminary connected with the college. In 1864 he was ordained as a minister and accepted, in the fall of the same year, a call to West Union, Lafayette Co., Iowa. In 1867 he was called to Madison, where he remained over eight years, went to Columbus in 1876 and accepted the all to pastorate of St. John's church at Jeffeson in 1881. It was one June 10, 1910, that he was laid to rest. On June 12, 1906 it was 25 years that he had entered upon his duties as pastor in Jefferson and his congregation celebrated the anniversary in a most befitting way.

While pastor in West Union, Rev. Vogel, in 1863, was married to Miss Augusta Gropp, his true and faithful companion for better or worse through forty-seven long years. Their Union was blessed with two sons, Herman A., of Milwaukee, and Leonard, of this city. Several years ago the couple adopted a girl, Grace, who now mourns with the grief stricken widow and the sons the death of the best of fathers.

Friday afternoon a short funeral service, for members of the family only, was held at the house by Rev. Haase and the remains were then taken to the church to lay in state and to enable the hundreds of friends of the deceased and the members of the congregation to see, for the last time, his face. Shortly after 2 o'clock the public funeral service began in the church; Prof. Moussa, of the Northwestern University at Watertown, gave the English sermon, Rev. O. Koch of Columbus, spoke in German and Rev. Siegler read a short obituary.

Interment took place in Union Cemetery. The funeral was probably the largest ever seen in Jefferson; from near and far people had come to pay the last sad honors to him they had loved and respected so much, to show the mourning family their sympathy. Six members of the Central Conference of the Wisconsin Synod, the Revs. Fredrich of Helenville, Ohde of Whitewater, Bergmann of Milton, Pankow, of Watertown, Klingmann of Watertown, and Guenther of Oconomowoc, were pallbearers.
