One of Dubuque's oldest and respected residents, Mrs. Sophie Spahn, was called by death Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at her residence, 525 Kaufmann Avenue. She had been in good health until a few days before she passed away and the end was sudden and unexpected by her family. Her death was caused by the infirmities of old age, being directly due to heart failure.

Mrs. Spahn was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, June 27, 1848, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Franke, and in company with her parents and older brothers and sisters came to this country two years later. The family moved directly to Dubuque, where she resided until the time of her death.

On July 20, 1867, she was united in marriage to Peter E. Spahn, a well know resident of this city who devoted practically all of his life to the occupation of mining in this locality.

The deceased was a devout and faithful Catholic, being a life long member of the Sacred Heart Church, by who's last rites she died comforted. She was also a member of the Rosary Society and the Third Order of St. Francis.

Mrs. Spahn was preceded to the grave by her husband thirty-nine years ago. She is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth at home, and five sons, all of whom reside in this city. Charles J., president of Spahn & Rose Lumber Company, Otto, foreman of the same firm, and John H., Peter E., and Frank S., all in employ of the Carr, Ryder & Adams Company: also twelve grandchildren.

One sister, Mrs. Mary Kiett, of Galena, and two brothers, Fred of this city, and William of Memphis, Tennessee, all preceded her in death several years ago.

Mrs. Spahn was a true christian, charitable and generous to a high degree. Her children, to whom she always gave first thought received the fullest treasure of a wise and devoted mother's love, and her friends, of which she possessed a large number, always found a cheery smile and a word of hope. The presence of this noble woman can never be replaced in the hearts of those who met and knew her.
