THOMAS JOHNSTON IS DEAD

Former Representative Thomas W. Johnston Expired Suddenly Friday Afternoon

Former Representative Thomas W. Johnston passed away suddenly Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home of his sister, Mrs. Patrick McCann, 448 Dodge street. Mr. Johnston had been in failing health for the past six weeks, but was not considered serious until a few hours before he passed away.

Mr. Johnston was a native of County Mayo, Ireland, where he was born in the year 1840. At an early age he emigrated to America with his parents, settling in Indiana, and later coming to Dubuque county. locating on a farm in Table Mound township, where he lived for a number of years. He was active in politics and twice represented Dubuque county in the Iowa legislature. He was a man of wide reading and general information. Though not an American by birth he was loyal to the institutions of his adopted country. Faithful to his friends, he never missed an opportunity to do a kindness either by word or act, and consequently he was liked by all who knew him.

For ten years he was superintendent of the poor farm, in which capacity he made many friends. Mr. Johnston never married, and had spent his last few years of his life with his sister, Mrs. Patrick McCann, who, with one other sister, Mrs. James Dougherty of San Francisco, Cal., survive him.
