PIONEER SETTLER DEAD

Charles Luther, Dubuque's Pioneer Cigar Merchant, Passes Away Tuesday

Charles Luther, another of Dubuque's old settlers, has passed away, his death occurring Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at his late residence, 1365 Clay street.

Mr. Luther was born December 28, 1825, in Berlin, Germany, coming to America in 1849 and settling in Chicago, where he was united in marriage to Wilhelmina Thode. In 1856 he came to Dubuque, where he has continuously resided since. Shortly after coming here he engaged in the cigar business from which he retired ten years ago.

Upright and honorable in all his dealings, he made a friend of all with whom he came in contact, who regret that a life so filled with acts of kindness and loyalty has come to an end. He was an active member of Iowa Lodge No. 1, A. O. U. W.

Surviving him are two sons and two daughters. They are: Mrs. Fred Scholz, Mrs. Ernest Holz, William and Frank Luther, all of Dubuque. The funeral will occur Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Services will be conducted at the home by Rev. Ficke.
