Death removed from this community yesterday one of Dubuque’s prominent business men – John Krayer, Sr., who died at 10:15 a.m. at his residence, 57 Hart Street.

Mr. Krayer was born in Metz, Alsace, Lothringen April, 12, 1838 and located at lower Menominee, Ill., for six months, after which time he left for Minnesota. He was sixteen years connected with the steamboat traffic on the Mississippi River, in private and government employ. He was employed by the government in furnishing the army with provisions and ammunition. He was married to Ella Rettinmeier March 1, 1865. Since 1870, he was engaged in business, thirteen years at the corner of Thirteenth and Clay Streets and thirteen years at the corner Fourteenth and Clay Streets. He was elected alderman of the Third Ward, but resigned after six months.

He is survived by his wife and seven sons and four daughters, Michael, Frank, John, William, Christ, Leo and Arnold, and Mrs. Ed Blitech, Misses Amy, Josephine and Clara. He was a member of the German Benevolent Society, Pius Society, and Roman Catholic Protective Society.

He was sick for one year and bore his suffering bravely and with fortitude, and passed away fully prepared to meet his Maker. The funeral will be held from the late family residence Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock to Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery. A delegation from the societies which he was a member will attend the funeral.
