John Dixon Cottingham, 79, of 1555 Delhi Street, president of the Cottingham and Butler Insurance Service, Inc., and widely known Dubuquer, died at 12:55 a.m. Tuesday in Finley Hospital after an extended illness.

Friends may call at the Eglehof Funeral Home after 7 p.m. Tuesday. Services will be held at Eglehof's at 2:30 p.m. Thursday and burial will be in the Center Grove Cemetery.

Born July 9, 1869, at Benton, Wis., son of the late Dixon and Barbara Cottingham, he moved to Dubuque a year later and had since resided here.

He started in the insurance business with his father, Dixon Cottingham, in 1907, and had since been active in that business. He was president of the general agency that bore his name, and for 12 years served as director of one of the well known Iowa insurance companies with the headquarters in Des Moines. He was a member of the Grandview Methodist Church.

On Sept. 18, 1902 he was married to Margaret Hoskins, of Dubuque, who preceded him in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Irving (Margaret) Welch, of South Bend, Ind., and Mrs. Ellis G. (Barbara) Butler of Dubuque, three sisters; Elizabeth and Eva Cottingham, and Mrs. Miles Brown, and one brother William Cottingham.

Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded by four brothers and three sisters.
