Walter L. Steger, 76, of 2424 Maplewood Drive, formerly of Holy Cross, Iowa, died at 4:05 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at the family home, following an extended illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Resurrection Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery, where there will be a flag presentation by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 1:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a wake service at 6:30 p.m.

Mr. Steger farmed in the Holy Cross area for 38 years until his retirement. He moved to Asbury, Iowa, in August 1988.

He was born on March 12, 1925, in Dubuque, son of Herbert and Hazel (Lewis) Steger. He married the former Cleo Ann Meinen on Feb. 10, 1947, at Holy Cross Catholic Church.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the Navy. He was a member of Resurrection Parish and a 44-year member of the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6.

Surviving are his wife, Cleo Ann; a daughter, Geralynn (Bob) Lord, of Peoria, Ill.; three sons, David (Doris) Steger, of Dyersville, Iowa, Lonnie (Kathy) Steger, of Dubuque, and Jesse (Karen) Steger, of New Vienna, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, Eric (Diane), Ted (Amy) and Jenny (fiance Troy Osterhaus) Steger, Kristie (Lee) Stump, Paul, Amy, Abby, Luke, Keri and Kayla Steger, and Jacqueline and Clint Lord; a great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Steger; and a brother, Gary (Mary) Steger, of Wichita, Kan.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ben Jay Steger, in 1983; an infant grandson, Tony Steger, in 1981; his parents; two sisters, Margaret Duttle and Miriam Lamb; and a brother, Fay Steger.
