EPWORTH, Iowa - Terry Thomas "T.T." Then, 46, of 208 Horsfield Drive, Epworth, died at 10:30 p.m. Monday, July 18, 2005, at home, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Epworth, with the Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Epworth. Friends may call from 1:30 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Epworth, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m. and the Epworth Fire Department will meet at 7 p.m.

Mr. Then was co-owner and operator of the Then & Kramer Construction Co. of Epworth.

He was born on June 21, 1959, in Dubuque, son of Thomas P. and Janell (Connolly) Then. He married Marce Hoffmann on Sept. 12, 1987, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Epworth.

He was a 1978 graduate of Western Dubuque High School, Epworth.

He was an active member of the Epworth Fire Department, since joining in October 1978. He served numerous terms on the board of directors including president and assistant chief/training officer. He was a member of the first emergency medical technician-1 and paramedic class when the service advanced in the 1980s. Terry was honored by his peers as the 1985 Firefighter of the Year. He also served as the first librarian of the Dubuque County Fire Fighters Association, organizing the training videos for the departments. Terry instructed many new firefighters teaching basic skills, extrication and fire suppression.

Surviving are his wife, Marce Then, of Epworth; two daughters, Bethany Then, at home and Bobbie (Shannon) Kramer, of Epworth; three sons, Tyler Then, at home, Greg Ernzen, of Dubuque, and Doug Ernzen of Epworth; a grandson, Dakota; his mother, Janell Then, of Epworth; a brother, Steve (Joyce) Then, of Peosta; three sisters, Joan (Tim) Gibbs, of Zwingle, Joyce (David) Rauen, of Epworth, and Marie (Paul) Duster, of Dubuque; his paternal grandmother, Sarah Then, of Dyersville; his father and mother-in-law, Vessie and Mary Jane Hoffmann, of Epworth; brothers and sisters-in-law, Marvin (Lynn) Hoffmann, R.J. Hoffmann and Gary (Lori) Hoffmann, all of Epworth, and Mike (Mary) Hoffmann, of Farley; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Then, on Oct. 15, 2000; his paternal grandfather, Peter Then; and his maternal grandparents, Louis and Jessie Connolly.

A Terry T. Then Memorial Fund has been established.

The family of Terry would like to thank the Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque nursing staff and emergency room staff, the Physicians and staff of Medical Associates, the Epworth Fire Department and all our friends for all the care and kindness they have given to Terry during his illness.
