FARLEY, Iowa - Robert J. Scherrman, 86, of 206 First Ave. SW, Farley, died at 7:46 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center-Dyersville.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Farley American Legion Post 656, the Society of the Forty & Eight Voiture of Dubuque County and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7736. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m., an American Legion service and a Veterans of Foreign Wars service at 7 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus service at 7:30 p.m. The Farley American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 6:45 p.m. today at the funeral home.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1918, in Dubuque, son of John and Mildred (Quirk) Scherrman. He attended St. Joseph and graduated from Farley Public School in 1936. He later attended Columbia College for one year.

He married LaNore Goodale on Jan. 30, 1946, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley; she preceded him in death on May 4, 1988. He later married Mary Ellen (Murphy) Moran on Jan. 25, 1992, at St. Raphael's Cathedral, Dubuque.

Robert worked at International Harvester and the BlackHawk Hotel in Davenport. He became a bookkeeper for Frank Scherrman in Dyersville before enlisting in the Air Force in September 1941.

During his tour of duty, he attended training schools in Roswell and Carlsbad, N.M., and Tampa, Fla. He was a lead bombardier on a B-17 during World War II. He lead raids on Germany, France, Austria, Romania, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Northern Italy, completing 48 missions until his discharge in 1945.

Bob worked at J.P. Scherrman Inc. until his retirement in 1981.

He was a Cub Scout master and founder of the Farley Little League. He was a member of the American Legion Post 656, Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7736, of New Vienna, and the Society of the Forty & Eight Voiture of Dubuque County. He was a charter member of the Commercial Club and served on the city council. He also was a member of St. Joseph's Parish and its Altar and Rosary Society and served as trustee for 20 years.

Bob enjoyed golf and playing cards and was a "loyal" Cubs fan. His longtime companion and "buddy" was Bill Scherrman, of Dyersville.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ellen; two sons, Paul (Jody), of Farley, and Tom, of Iowa City; two daughters, Brenda (Dan) Miller, of Vian, Okla., and Lynn (Jerry) Konzen, of Farley; five stepchildren, Sharon (Donald) Till, John (Sue) Moran and Maureen (Kevin) Kalloway, all of Dubuque, Linda (Nick) White, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Pat Moran, of Bloomington, Ill.; seven grandchildren, John (Tricia) Scherrman, Mike Scherrman, Rob Scherrman, Molly Scherrman, Shane Miller, Tim Konzen and Beth (Andy) Simon; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Scherrman, Molly Scherrman and Natalie Scherrman; two sisters, Frances "Sis" Smith, of Hudson, Ohio, and Sharon (Dick) Osterhaus, of Dyersville; and two brothers, Larry (Irene) Scherrman, of Farley, and Jack (Pat) Scherrman, of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Robert J. Scherrman Memorial Fund has been established.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Schope, Dr. Mozena, Ennoble Manor Care Center in Dubuque and Oak Crest Manor in Dyersville for all their care and support. Special thanks to Dr. Thomas Miner and the staff at St. Mary's in Dyersville for all their loving care and support this past week.
