Viola V. Butteris

Mrs. Viola V. Butteris, 57, of Parkview Nursing Home, Waterloo, Iowa, formerly of Independence, Iowa, and Dubuque, died at 5:20 a.m. Sunday, March 21, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, surrounded by her family.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Mueller Memorial Chapel at Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., Dubuque.

 She was born on April 21, 1946, in Dubuque, daughter of Violet Lightfoot. Viola was raised by her mother and stepfather, Leonard Dress, Sr. She married Adrian J. "Smokey" Butteris in 1972; he preceded her in death on Sept. 7, 1975.

She was a member of the Salvation Army and the Home League Association in Dubuque. She also was generous in volunteering her time at Operation New View and the Food Pantry. Viola enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She liked to make crafts, and she liked to cook and bake - Just ask her family!

Surviving are two sons, Michael S. (Theresa) Beckett and Billy Joe (Phyllis) Butteris, both of Dubuque; three daughters, Fay M. (fiance, Mark McGonigle) Brenner, of Fredericksburg, Iowa, Sherry L. (William) Jacobs, of Lamont, Iowa, and Julie A. Butteris, of Independence; 12 grandchildren; her mother, Violet Dress, of Dubuque; three sisters, Kathy (Tom) Wall, Rosemarie Dress and Sherry (Gerry) Hartford, all of Dubuque; three brothers, Leonard (Lorrain) Dress, Jr., William (Sharren) Dress and Edward (Charlotte) Dress, all of Dubuque; nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Donald Gunningham, of Independence.

 She also was preceded in death by her stepfather, Leonard Dress Sr., in 1998.

 A Viola V. Butteris Memorial Fund has been established.
