The death of Herman A. Ellwanger, aged 75, occurred at the family residence, 146 Liebnitz street, Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock following an illness of three months.

The deceased was a pioneer of this city having come here with his parents 68 years ago. He was affiliated with Harmony Lodge, No. 2, I.O.O.F., Hyde Clark Post, G.A.R. and Germania lodge, No. 237, A.O.U.W.

Mr. Ellwanger was born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, March 4, 1845, and came to America July 1, 1852.

Having enlisted at the age of 19 in Company E, Fifth Iowa cavalry, he was taken prisoner July 30, 1864 at Newman, Ga., and was sent to the Andersonville prison for two months. After five weeks imprisonment at Charleston, S. C., he was transferred to Florence, S.C. from where he was released in December, 1864. He received his discharge from the army June 24, 1865.

Two years after his marriage to Emma Mary Dunkley, June 16, 1870, his wife and infant daughter Bertha Anna were killed when the town clock fell, May 25, 1872.

He married Elizabeth Jane Dunkley (sister of the deceased) on June 10, 1875.

At this time, Mr. Ellwanger conducted the flour mill at Richardsville. From March 22, 1880 until November, 1910, he was with the Brady Ellwanger company and John Ellwanger company. Since then he has been connected with the Dubuque Electric company until May 1 of this year when he was compelled to give up his work on account of failing health.

Besides his widow, two daughters Mrs. O. L. Sahl of Keokuk, Mrs. Charles A. Stoltz, two sons, Harry and John C., all of Dubuque, five grandchildren, one brother Otto of Dubuque, two sisters, Mrs. H. W. Scott, Dubuque, and Mrs. George H. Hess of Dallas, Texas are left to mourn his passing.

Funeral afternoon at cemetery. Services will be held at the residence Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Burial will be made at Linwood cemetery.
