Rites Are Held For Former Area Pastor
Funeral service for the Rev. Peter J. Friedman, former pastor of St. Peter's church, Sabula and Ss. Peter and Paul's church at Springbrook, were held Wednesday, February 23, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Aloysius church in Calmar, Iowa, where he was serving as pastor.
Father Friedman died suddenly February 19 of a heart attack in the parish rectory. The Most Rev. Leo Binz, Archbishop of Dubuque was celebrant of the requiem mass. The Rev. H. A. Heinrichs, pastor of St. John's church at Preston, preached the funeral sermon. Interment was made at the church cemetery in Calmar.
Father Friedman was born in Luxembourg, Iowa on July 26, 1885. He graduated from Loras College at Dubuque and St. Paul's seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 9, 1914 by the late Archbishop John Ireland. He served as pastor at Sabula from 1921 to 1926, at St. Theresa's from 1926 to 1932 and at Ss. Peter and Paul's at Springbook from 1932 to 1946. Since July 1, 1946 he has been pastor of the Calmar church.
