David K. Nelson, 54, of Dubuque, died Sunday, May 13, 2012, at Luther Manor, as a result of Huntington's disease.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2659 Kennedy Road, with the Rev. Greg Bjornstad officiating. Burial will be in the Center Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from after 10 a.m. today at the funeral home.

David was born on June 7, 1957, in Dubuque, son of Donald and Helen (Stewart) Nelson. He graduated from Hempstead High School, class of 1975. He continued his education at the University of Iowa, receiving a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering .

He was employed at Monsanto Chemical in Muscatine, Iowa, from 1980 to 2001, when he was placed on disability retirement due to progression of Huntington's disease.

David loved watching sports, especially the Packers and Hawkeyes, listening to music and reading the paper.

Surviving are his children, Chelsey (Jesse) Lenz, and Tyler Nelson; a granddaughter, Parker Lenz, all of Iowa City; his father, Donald Nelson, of Dubuque; brothers, Peter Nelson, of Dubuque, Randy (Patricia) Nelson, of Sparks, Nev.; a sister, Suzanne (Dennis) Ohnesorge, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his aunt, Doris Nelson; nephews, Ryan Nelson, Brett Nelson and Todd (Kim) Ohnesorge; nieces, Nicole Nelson and Dena Ohnesorge; and a great-nephew, Connor Ohnesorge.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen.
