Karla Berns

Karla K. Berns, 72, of Dubuque died Sunday, May 26, 2013. Funeral services were held Friday, May 31 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Dubuque. Burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a Karla K. Berns memorial fund has been established.
Karla was born November 29, 1940 in Waukon, the daughter of Verni and Eleanora(Taake) Berns. She was educated at Union Prairie #2 rural grade school and St. Patrick’s High School in Waukon. She received her bachelor’s degree from Clarke College and her master’s degree from Loras College. She received her RN diploma from Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque. As a Presentation Sister for 12 years (Sr. M. Mark), she devoted her life to God and education.
Karla began her working career at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, where she held various positions in medical-surgical units. She began teaching nursing in 1970 at Mercy School of Nursing until it closed in 1974. She then worked at Northeast Iowa Community College for 29 years as a nursing instructor, health department dean, Peosta Campus Provost and Vice President of Education Services for the district. She retired in 2003.
Karla was active in her parish, St. Columbkille Catholic Church, serving on many committees and volunteering at events. Her faith, family, friends and students were very important to her. She was a Presentation associate and helped to nurture and support the associate partnership.
She learned to play bridge in her retirement years and was always ready for a card game of some sort. She was an avid crocheter and donated many items to her church and local charity fundraisers.
Surviving include her siblings, Mary Ann (Ray) Burke, Betty Howe, Verdine (Mavis) Berns, Francis (Margaret) Berns, Art (Joan) Berns and Bernard (Eileen) Berns; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Bill Stoffel and family. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother-in-law, Emmett Howe; and two nephews, Jeff Berns and Kevin Howe.
The Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory of Dubuque assisted the family with arrangements.
