John J. Flynn

John J. "Johnny" Flynn, 72, of 2112 St. Ambrose St., passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at home, with his family by his side, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Placid, rural Epworth, Iowa. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a parish scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Flynn was a brick layer for 45 years until his retirement in 1993. For the past 10 years, he had been performing part time maintenance at St. Anthony's.

He was born on Feb. 10, 1931, in Dubuque, son of William and Matilda (Connolly) Flynn. He married Donna Urbain on Jan. 7, 1956, at St. John's Catholic Church, Placid, rural Epworth.

He enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Society. He also was a longtime member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

John was a man who loved and provided for his family and will always be remembered for his strong work and social ethics.

Surviving are his wife, Donna Flynn, of Dubuque; seven children, Debra (Dennis) Viertel, Terry (Lesley) Flynn and Bill (Traci) Flynn, all of Dubuque, Mike (Sally) Flynn, of Grand Junction, Colo., Tom (Jean) Flynn, of Naturita, Colo., Jim (Debbie) Flynn, of Decorah, Iowa, and Jenny (Chris) Kelley, of Bettendorf, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; two sisters, Betty (Leonard) Sobieski, of Vienna, Va., and Jean (Gus) Casaccio, of Bloomingdale, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Madonna Flynn, of Dubuque; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; a sister, Mary Flynn; and a brother, Melvin Flynn.

A John J. Flynn Memorial Fund has been established.
