Charles R. Holmes, 85, of 1170 Mount Loretta St., died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements.

He owned a Western Auto Store in Denton, Texas, and he worked for Job Service of Iowa until his retirement in 1981.

He was born on Aug. 18, 1918, in Dubuque, son of Harry L. and Mildred (Stuber) Holmes. He married Madona Peschong in 1946, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church.

Chuck had fond memories of serving in the South Pacific in the Air Force in World War II.

Mr. Holmes enjoyed traveling the United States and visiting with his children and grandchildren. He loved life and wanted all to develop their faith which reveals the truth.

Surviving are his wife, Madona Holmes, of Dubuque; three children, Susan (Geoffery) Parr, of Hurst, Texas, Barbara (Roger) Arentson, of Delano, Minn., and John M. (Deborah) Holmes, of Colona, Ill.; six grandchildren, Katie and Colin Parr, John R. and Rebekah Holmes and Alice and Andrew Arentson; and a brother, John L. Holmes, of Denton.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Luke's United Methodist Church and the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.
