Dorothy E. (Hittenmiller) Kieffer, 83, of Bethany Home, formerly of 1500 N. Grandview Ave., died at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Nativity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Nativity BVM Cemetery, Menominee, Ill. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a parish scripture wake service at 6:30 p.m.

Mrs. Kieffer worked at Piekenbrock Shoe Co., which later became Smith Shoe Co. She later became a sales clerk at McCauley Drug Store, Brammers Grocery Store and National Tea Grocery Store.

She was born on Nov. 17, 1919, in Dubuque, daughter of William A. and Ella (Westemeyer) Hittenmiller. She married Donald Kieffer in 1968, at Nativity Catholic Church; he passed away on Oct. 20, 1988.

Dorothy was born in Dubuque, and had lived here all her life.

She had been a member of Nativity Parish since 1932, and was a member of its Rosary Society, Guild and the Legion of Mary. Dorothy enjoyed playing a good game of euchre.

Surviving are a brother, L.W. "Vern" (Rita) Hittenmiller, of Dubuque; a sister, Irma Kelly, of Dubuque; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Donald "Red" Hittenmiller and Carl Hittenmiller; and two sisters, Helen Kaufmann and Ruth Herdrich.

In lieu of flowers, a Dorothy E. Kieffer Memorial Fund has been established.

Dorothy's family wishes to thank Dr. Osamah Khatib, the staff at the VNA, Meals on Wheels, Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque and Bethany Home and the neighbors and friends for their constant care and compassion.
