Melvin F. "Mel" Anthony

Melvin F. "Mel" Anthony, 81 of 1331 Oak Park Place formerly of 9576 Monticello DR passed away on Wednesday March 28, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center. Services will be at 12:00pm Saturday March 31st at St. Joseph Church Key West with Rev. Donald Bakewell officiating. Burial will be Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 Friday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd where there will be a wake service at 3pm. Friends may also call after 9am Saturday at the funeral home until time of services.

He was born on May 20, 1930 in Sherrill, IA the son of Charles and Josephine (Nauman) Anthony. He served in the US Army from 1952 to 1954 in Korea. He married Geraldine Johnson on September 15, 1956 at Sacred Heart Fillmore. He worked for the Dubuque County Conservation Dept. for 35 years retiring in 1992 as Park Superintendent. He was a member of American Legion Post #6, Dubuque Men's Association, and St. Joseph Key West Parish and the Holy Name Society. Mel dearly loved his family especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid baseball and Chicago Cub fan.

He is survived by his wife Geraldine "Geri" a daughter Karen (Randy) Bettcher, and a son Ken (Kathy) Anthony all of Dubuque. Four grandchildren, Lacy Bettcher, Kansas City, MO, Sam Bettcher, of Dubuque, Laura (Josh) Rudolph of Desoto, TX, and Michael Anthony, of Cedar Falls, IA, a sister Doris (Walt) Pitz, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and six brothers, Wilfred, Herbert, Jack, Charles, James, and Merlin.

A Melvin Anthony memorial fund has been established.
