Esther M. Essman, 89, of 3129 Hillcrest Road, Apt. 205, died at 10:39 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, with the Rev. David Pacholke officiating. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

She was born on Aug. 22, 1914, in Dubuque, daughter of Henry and Emma (Goffinet) Hoerner. She married Eldon "Bud" Essman on Oct. 28, 1938, in Dubuque; he preceded her in death in 1980.

She was a member of The Finley Hospital Auxiliary, the Hillcrest Service League, the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens and Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are many nieces and nephews, especially Sue Reilly, who cared for her for many years; and two sisters-in-law, Joan Voigts and Carol Flynn.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy, in 1992; and 10 brothers and sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Esther's name to Hillcrest Family Services and the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.
