Telegraph Herald - Friday, August 29, 2003

Mrs. Victor M. (Lorraine A.) Neises, 84, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of 1865 Asbury Road, died peacefully, surrounded by her five sons and family, at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at the care center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 5 p.m.

She was born on May 29, 1919, in Lore, Iowa (near Asbury, Iowa), daughter of Joseph and Anna (Potts) Schadler. Lorraine attended school in a one-room stone schoolhouse in Lore.

She was an accomplished seamstress at a young age. Wearing her own hand-crafted wedding gown, she married Victor M. Neises on Aug. 26, 1942, at St. Philomena's Catholic Church, Asbury; he preceded her in death on March 6, 2003.

After marriage, Lorraine's main focus was being mother and homemaker for her family. She taught her five sons many values, not the least of which was to be advocates for children, the planet and healthy living. She accomplished many things and promoted "figure it out for yourself!"

She continued sewing as her grandchildren grew. Their most prized possession from her was their Raggedy Ann or Andy handmade dolls.

Lorraine was a member of St. Anthony's Parish and Rosary Society, the Tri-State Garden Club, Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Power of Prayer.

She designed and hand-crafted clothing, dressing dolls for the 1st National Bank Christmas Program for 30 years.

She was also the only mom on our block that could clean a turtle.

Surviving are five sons, David F. (Charlotte) Neises, Delmer L. (Patricia) Neises and Anthony D. Neises, all of Dubuque, James E. (Martha) Neises, of Fillmore, Iowa, and Merle V. (Mary) Neises, of Galena, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandsons; and three sisters-in-law, Margaret Schadler and Eulalia "Tootie" Schadler, both of Dubuque, and Lorraine Neises Miller, of Fennimore, Wis.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Leonard (Cecelia) Paisley and Mrs. Edward (Evelyn) Steil; and three brothers, Milton, Marvin and Lester Schadler.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association, 1690 Elm St., Dubuque, Iowa 52001, the Tri-State Garden Club and the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, 3125 W. 32nd St., Dubuque, Iowa 52001.
