Marion A. Hackney, 78, of 1843 Auburn, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

Mrs. Hackney worked in the marking department at the former Roshek's Department Store and as an enumerator and supervisor for R. L. Polk City Directory for 30 years.

She was born on July 12, 1925, in Pelican Rapids, Minn., daughter of Anton and Marie (Holtz) Jorstad.

She volunteered for the Red Cross for 30 years, both as a disaster chairperson and as a receptionist in The Finley Hospital Surgical waiting room. She received the Dubuque Chapter of the Red Cross first disaster service award, which is now named the Marion Hackney Disaster Service Award.

She loved the outdoors, was an avid environmentalist and enjoyed fishing. She was a member of the Dubuque Chapter of the Izaak Walton League for 20 years, 15 years as the membership chairperson. In addition to the Marion Hackney Disaster Service Award, she earned many other volunteer awards for her work with the Red Cross and Izaak Walton League. She also was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

Surviving are her husband, John "Jack" Hackney, of Dubuque; a daughter, Gail Miller (David Goetzinger), of Dubuque; a son: Dale (Nancy Lee) Hackney, of Blythe, Calif.; and nine grandchildren, Jonathan, Breanna, Kaila, Tiara, Jared, Jordan and Jakeb Hackney and Lisa and Jeffrey Miller.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

Memorials may be given to the American Red Cross of the Tri-States and Hospice of Dubuque.
