Walter E. "Walt" Wernimont, 85, of 3460 Starlight Drive, formerly of 205 State St., died at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Phillip Kruse officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans Association and the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, Ill., where there will be a parish scripture service at 2:30 p.m.

Mr. Wernimont worked as maintenance supervisor at John Deere Dubuque Works for 25 years, retiring in 1979.

He was born on Dec. 9, 1917, near Asbury, Iowa, the son of Michael and Elizabeth (Schilling) Wernimont. He married Lois K. Gilligan on Nov. 22, 1947, at St. Philomena Church in Asbury.

He was a World War II veteran, having served with the Army.

He was a member of the United Automobile Workers Local 94 and a member of the U.A.W. Retirees. He also was a member of St. Columbkille's Parish.

Surviving are his wife, Lois (Gilligan) Wernimont; two daughters, Linda (Lynn) Johnsen, of Lodi, Wis., and Sandra (Robert) Johnsen, of Dubuque; four sons, Alvin C. "Butch" Wernimont, James M. (Rhonda) Wernimont and Thomas J. (Anne) Wernimont, all of Dubuque, and Kenneth E. (Karen) Wernimont, of Davenport, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; three sisters, Loretta Maiers and Marcella (Don) Jewett, both of Dubuque, and Marie (Melvin) Lolwing, of Hazel Green, Wis.; two brothers, Victor (Pauline) Wernimont, of Mount Clemens, Mich., and Vincent Wernimont, of Dubuque; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Joseph, Clarence, Ray, Leo and John at birth; and a sister, Catherine Avery.
