Florence Burns

Telegraph Herald - Friday, July 25, 2003

Mrs. Ed (Florence "Flossie" "Min" Burns, 80, of Dubuque Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of 1665 Scenic View Drive, died at 7:35 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at the center, surrounded by many of her loved ones.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mueller Memorial Chapel at Linwood Cemetery. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., and after 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel.

Flossie retired many years ago from Medical Associates. Prior to that, she worked for the University of Dubuque, Colonial Terrace Animal Hospital, Spiegel's and Aldens. She was a great decorator and enjoyed redecorating her home frequently.

She was born on June 23, 1923, in Lead Mine, Wis., daughter of LeRoy and Bernice (Murray) Fritz.

She married the love of her life and constant companion, Ed Burns, on May 21, 1942, in Maquoketa, Iowa. She spent nearly every non-working moment with her husband fishing, hunting, playing cards, bowling, dancing and going to the dog track until she became too ill to do so. At that point, he became her constant guardian, always giving her much tender loving care and rarely leaving her side. They had that rare old-fashioned type of marriage that really did honor their "until death do us part" vow. They truly were the love of each other's life.

She one son, James Robert (Sandra) Burns, of Plano, Texas; and two daughters, Helen Elizabeth "Betty" (Ray) Buol, of East Dubuque, Ill., and Marianne (Bruce) Avery, of Dubuque. In addition, she was blessed with 10 wonderful grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Ed Burns; her children and grandchildren; her sisters, Cora Mae Mascow, of Las Vegas, and Jean Altfillisch, of Platteville, Wis.; her brothers, Bill (Betty) Fritz and Bob Fritz, both of Dubuque, Tony (Carole) Fritz, of Cuba City, Wis., and Homer (Mary) Fritz, of East Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, LeRoy "Bud" Fritz; and a sister, Susan (Tom) Barlage.

The family of Florence Burns would like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff at Dubuque Nursing and Rehabilitation Center who provided her and our family with so much wonderful care and attention during her seven-year stay with them.
