--

Our columns this morning contain a notice of the death of Miss Eleanor Sields, the venerable aunt of our respected fellow-citizen, Mr. Thos. Shields, of the firm of Stewart, Shields & co.

In the death of Miss Shields we have to record the demise of an old settler, that estimable lady having been a resident of Dubuque for the last [? 35 years - difficult to read]. Her sickness arose from an affection of the head, which has unfortunately been increased by the excitement produced consequent upon the drowning of her relative on the 4th inst. Her death occurred at 11 o'clock last night, and in deploring her loss we sympathize most sincerely with all to whom she was connected. "The golden bowl is broken," but "the spirit has returned unto God who gave it," Such is life; how little we prize it; how small an estimate we form of its duties. Miss Shields' death will be keenly felt. She was a kind, good-natured, and sincerely christian-like, and though gone beyond earthly recall, has received a heavenly summons which will translate her from a world of sorrow into the sphere of eternal bliss.
