Sister Rose Sweeney

Sister Rose Sweeney, 70, of Holy Family Hall, died at 7:55 a.m. Sunday, June 8, 2003, at the Holy Family Hall Infirmary.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Mount St. Francis Chapel with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7:30 p.m. today at the chapel, where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m. The Egelhof, Siegert, and Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of the arrangements.

Sister Rose ministered as a homemaker in the Iowa cities of Dubuque (St. Mary and Mary of the Angels), Sioux City (Briar Cliff), Waterloo (St. Mary and St. Edward), Haverhill, Petersburg and in St. Louis. She also ministered as a nurse aide in Dubuque and St. Paul, Minn.

She was born on Nov. 21, 1932, in Epworth, Iowa, daughter of Leo and Mabel (McDermott) Sweeney.

She entered the Sisters of St. Francis on Aug. 25, 1952, and made her final profession of religious vows on Aug. 10, 1958.

Surviving are brothers, Phil (Mary), Dick (Lois), Tom (JoAnn), and Francis (Sharon); a sister, Julie (Paul) Hildebrand; brothers-in-law, John Connolly and Charles Hemmer; and the Franciscan Sisters with whom she shared 50 years of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Benedict; and sisters, Therese Connolly, Louise Conrad and Ann Hemmer.

Memorials may be given to the Sisters of St. Francis, Dubuque.

The Sisters of St. Francis wish to thank Hospice for their care for Sr. Rose during these last months of her life.
