Del O'Hea

Del O'Hea, 79, of 260 Cross St., passed away at 2:20 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010, at home, following a short battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Leonard Funeral and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a parish wake service at 7 p.m.

He was born on Feb. 27, 1931, in Dubuque County, son of Alex and Lorraine (Noel) O'Hea. He married Mary Bahl on May 3, 1958, at St. Philomena's Church, Asbury, Iowa.

Del attended St. Columbkille's grade and high school, graduating in 1949. As a parishioner of St. Columbkille's for more than 70 years, he was an usher, a member of St. Vincent de Paul for more than 60 years, and served on the parish council and many church committees. He also was a director of the Mount Olivet Cemetery Association.

Del was a salesman at Ridge Motor and Machine for more than 30 years, owned and ran the Grandview Milk House, and for the past 17 years was a driver for the Sisters of the Presentation.

He was a very talented piano player and loved to entertain others with his ability to play any song "by ear." Del was a pitcher for the Key West Ramblers and the Cascade Reds and was inducted into the Dubuque County Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992. He also was a lifelong White Sox fan. Del loved his family more than anything else, especially his seven grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Mary; their five children, Dave (Barb) O'Hea, and their son, Jack, of Peosta, Iowa, Sue (Mike) Fleege, and their children, Jordan, Taylor and Collin, of Dubuque, Julie O'Hea, of Chandler, Ariz., Jennifer (Scott Walker) O'Hea, and their children, Aidan and Evangeline, of Tempe, Ariz., Sarah (Peter) Harrison, and their son, Stuart, of London; a brother, Don (Colleen) O'Hea; two sisters, Lou Ann O'Hea and Mary McGrath; a brother-in-law, Joe Stelken; and a sister-in-law, Ann O'Hea.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Lorraine (Noel) O'Hea; siblings, Lois Stelken, Jeanette O'Hea and Jerry O'Hea; and a brother-in-law, Jerry McGrath.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Vincent de Paul, St. Columbkille Parish and Hospice of Dubuque.
