Frieda E. Luther, 67, of 2170 Roosevelt St., died at 10:32 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at home surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 4 p.m.

Mrs. Luther worked for 35 years at St. Regis/Georgia Pacific Paper Co. She will be remembered for her "retirement job" as fee collector for Eagle Point Park.

She was born on Jan. 1, 1936, in Beetown, Grant County, Wis., daughter of Jacob and Rose (Bucher) Schurman. She married Raymond R. Luther on Feb. 27, 1954. at St. Clement's Catholic Church, Lancaster, Wis.; he died on Oct. 1, 1987.

Frieda was a graduate of St. Clara Academy, Sinsinawa Mound, Wis., class of 1953. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the United Steel Workers of America, Local 1861-U.

She was a volunteer at The Finley Hospital in the surgery waiting room. She also was a proud Democrat. Frieda was an avid card player, especially Skip-Bo, cribbage and euchre. She liked to travel, and on her last trip to Hawaii, at the age of 62, she went parasailing and snorkeling.

Frieda was a great cook and won awards for her recipes. She liked to ride motorcycles and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and Wisconsin Badgers fan. Frieda's favorite pastime was spending time with her family, grandchildren and friends and with her pet beagle, Barney.

Surviving are three daughters, Debbie A. (Wayne) Pierce and Tina M. (Kenny) Womack, both of Trenton, Texas, and Kathy J. (David) Baker, of Dubuque; eight grandchildren, Mike Steffen, David (Jessica) Steffen and Jennifer Thissen, Kurt (Melissa) Kies, and Krista Kies, and Jessie, Andrea and Cassie Baker; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlin Steffen and Kylyn Baker-White; a special friend and companion, Burt J. Hubanks, of Dubuque; four sisters-in-law, Betty Schurman and Lorraine Schurman, both of Lancaster, Wis., Maxine Schurman, of Melbourne, Fla., and LaVon Schurman, of Bagley, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by a sister, Rose Vraspir; and four brothers, Jake, Otto, Joe and John Schurman.

Memorials may be given to Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hospice of Dubuque and The Finley Hospital.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Kirk Payne and his staff and the nurses and staff of Hospice of Dubuque for their care and concern.
