A Pioneer Called

Death of Mrs. Agnes Langworthy Removes One of Dubuque's Earliest Settlers.

Mrs. Agnes Langworthy, widow of the late James L. Langworthy, and one of the very earliest pioneers of this county, passed away at 5 o'clock last evening at her home 404 James street. The deceased was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her maiden name was Agnes Milne. In 1840 she was united in marriage with James Langworthy, who died suddenly March 14th, 1865, while on a visit to Monticello. Mr. Langworthy participated in all the early history of the state. Long before a single house stood in Galena he traversed that part of the country on horseback, accompanied by Indians as companions and guides. He crossed the river at Dunleith to come to Dubuque, which was at that time a vast wilderness without a sign of habitation. The deceased became interested in mining and from this source and the purchase of vast tracts of land in and about Dubuque amassed a large fortune. In the death of his widow, those, who recall the genial hospitality extended them in the palatial home of this worthy family will regret the passing of her, who shared in hardships as well as the successes of her late husband. At all times she was at his side to assist him in any enterprise in which he became interested.

The deceased was an invalid for many years, bearing the burden of her illness with a peaceful resignation. She was a Christian in every sense of the word, doing at all times for those in distress. One son, Douglas, and two daughters, Miss Augusta of this city, and Mrs. Fred. I. Massey of London, England, survive her. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon. Burial private.
