Joseph R. Swartzel, 90, of 1160 Solon St., died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Regina Caeli Chapel at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave.

Mr. Swartzel worked at the former Roshek's Department Store for 35 years.

He was born on June 12, 1912, in Dubuque, son of Archibald and Elizabeth (Fritsche) Swartzel. He married Rita Erpelding on Aug. 16, 1941, at St. John's Catholic Church, Waterloo, Iowa; she died in 1983.

He graduated from Columbia Academy and Loras College. He was a member of Nativity Catholic Church.

He was an outstanding father and a much beloved grandfather.

Surviving are two sons, Robert (Judith) Swartzel, of Charleston, S.C., and Paul (Mary) Swartzel, of Dubuque; three grandchildren, Lisa Flanagan, of Baton Rouge, La., Laura Jones, of London, England, and Christopher Swartzel, of Hull, Mass.; three great-grandchildren, Liam, Devon and Beatrice; a brother, A.D. Swartzel, of Arlington, Va.; and a sister, Gloria Koenig, of Eden Prairie, Minn.

Memorials may be given to the Arthritis Foundation.
