Charles J. Banwarth

Charles J. Banwarth, 89, of 114 Princeton Place, died at 6:10 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010, at Luther Manor.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, with the Rev. Mark Ressler officiating. Entombment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where the rosary will be recited at 3 p.m.

He was born on Aug. 5, 1920, in Sherrill, Iowa, son of John and Clara (Jungblut) Banwarth. He married Eunice Sitterly on Dec. 30, 1942, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Charles worked for Banworth and Udelhoven Furniture World, in appliances and furniture repair, and specialized in woodworking and repairing clocks.

He was an active member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.

Charles was devoted to his wife and family and to the Blessed Virgin.

Surviving are his wife, Eunice; children, Judy (Roger) Hafeman, Jane (Otto) Buti and Jim (Francine) Banwarth, all of Dubuque, Joan (Denny) Shields, of Montfort, Wis., Mary (Jerry) Klimesh, of Cuba City, Wis., and Dan (Toni) Banwarth, of Peosta, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, George Banworth, of Dubuque; a sister-in-law, Virginia Banwarth, of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alvin (Armella), Joseph, Francis "Whitey" and Harold; a sister, Mary (Ray) Herbst; a grandson, Michael Christopher Klimesh; and a great-grandson, Cole Thomas Shields.

In lieu of flowers, a Charles J. Banwarth Memorial Fund has been established.

The family wishes to thank all of the health care professionals, especially Dr. Matthew Kirkendall, the nurses and staff of Luther Manor, Rev. Mark Ressler and Rev. James Parker, and Charles, nephew, Brian, for all of the care and kindness they gave to Charles and his family
