Mary Jane Dohrer, 78, of 1022 Iris Court, died at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003, at The Finley Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a parish scripture wake service at 7 p.m.

She was born on Oct. 4, 1924, in Dubuque, daughter of Harry M. and Mayme M. (Oppelt) Haggerty.

She married William C. Toner on May 7, 1949; he died on Dec. 5, 1969. On July 3, 1981, she married Robert Dohrer.

Mary Jane lived in Dubuque all her life. In 1945, she graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and worked at the hospital for several years. She then was employed by the city of Dubuque Health Department for 14 years as a school nurse. The next six years she spent working in the lab with the City Water Department.

She was very active in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and received the Governor's Volunteer Award. Mary Jane also volunteered at Hillcrest Family Services for more than 16 years and was the recipient of the "Volunteer Of The Year" award in 2001. She was a longtime member of St. Patrick's Parish and enjoyed dancing and bingo.

Surviving are her husband, Robert, of Dubuque; her children, Jane Toner Schadle, of Dubuque, Ann (Randy) Tigges, of Maquoketa, Iowa, Sue (Michael) Lindecker, of Dubuque, and Timothy (Lavonne) Toner, of Dubuque; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her brother, Jim (Penny) Haggerty, of Highland, Calif.; and her sisters, Janaan Hancock and Harriet (Bob) Runde, both of Dubuque.

She also was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John M. Haggerty.

A Mary Jane Dohrer Memorial Fund has been established.

Mary Jane's family wishes to thank the many family and friends who were so helpful with their prayers and support throughout her illness. And also to the nursing staff at Finley's ICU and the physicians at Dubuque Internal Medicine for their wonderful care.
