Victor M. Neises

Telegraph Herald - Sunday, March 9, 2003

Victor M. Neises, 82, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of 1865 Asbury Road, died at 12:40 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2003, at the care center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be the parish wake service at 4:30 p.m.

He worked as a machinist at Morrison Brothers for 35 years, until his retirement in 1982.

He was born on March 25, 1920, in Dubuque, son of Frank and Lena (Wagner) Neises.

He married Lorraine A. Schadler on Aug. 26, 1942, at St. Philomena's Catholic Church, Asbury. He farmed in the Mud Lake area with his father until 1948, when he moved his family to Dubuque.

Vic was a musician, starting as a teenager playing the banjo accompanied by his sister, Lorraine, on the accordion. His musical interests took him throughout the area playing with the Leo Beschen Cowboys and Koethe's Melody Kings. Later, he spent many Sundays entertaining at area retirement homes with his good friend, Bob Stecher.

After his retirement, Vic was actively involved in the Tri-State Garden Club, RSVP, the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, and the Power of Prayer.

Vic was a volunteer at St. Anthony's School from 1982 to 1999, where he was "Grandpa Neises" to the children. Vic was honored in 1987 by Gov. Terry Branstad with the Governor's Volunteer Award for his work in the Learning Resource Center at St. Anthony's School.

He was a member of the Machinists Local 1238. He was an active member of St. Anthony's Parish and served as an usher for many years.

Vic's most challenging endeavor was remaining a loyal Cubs fan!

Surviving are his wife, Lorraine A. Neises; five sons, David F. (Charlotte) Neises, Delmer L. (Patricia) Neises and Anthony D. Neises, all of Dubuque, James E. (Martha) Neises, of Fillmore, Iowa, and Merle V. (Mary) Neises, of Galena, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lorraine (Busch) Miller, of Fennimore, Wis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Anthony's School, 2175 Rosedale, Dubuque, Iowa 52001.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the nurses and staff at Stonehill Care Center for their care and concern for Vic and Lorraine.
