Richard D. "Dick" Shireman 79, of 3654 Welu Dr. No. 2 formerly of Joliet, Ill., died at 3:15 a.m. Sunday, May 12, 2002, at Manor Care Health Services.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Resurrection Catholic church. Burial will be
in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a Parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on Sept 9, 1922 in Dubuque, son of Turon C. and Edna (Preston) Shireman.

Dick served with the Navy 88th Seabees, during World War II in the Philippines and the Asiatic -Pacific Theater.

He married Lorraine M. Link on May 2, 1942, at Sacred Heart Church in Dubuque. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary a week ago.

Dick was a plastering contractor for more than 50 years and worked his trade in Joliet until his retirement in 1998.

He was a former member of St. Jude Parish in Joliet, Ill. Dick was a member in Resurrection Catholic Church in Dubuque. He was an avid checkers player and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. He had a quick wit and liked visiting with people, especially Baby Nancy. He will be missed by his family and friends.

Surviving are his wife, Lorraine M. Shireman, a daughter, Karen (Skip) Weeks-Kozma, of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; a son Mark Shireman of Chesapeak, Va.; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, a daughter-in-law Karen (Harry) King, of Joliet; two sisters, Margaret (Roger) Cox, of Dubuque, and Arlene (Bill) Blake, of Newport News, Va.; a brother, Edward Shireman of South San Francisco, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Shireman; a son-in-law, James Carter; a brother
Fred in infancy; and brothers and sister-in-law: Robert and Maxine Shireman and George and Henrietta Shireman.
A Richard D. Shireman Memorial Fund has been established. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Manor Care for their care and concern for Dick.
