Merlin P. Puls

Merlin P. Puls, 74, of 97 E. 28th St., formerly of Sherrill, Iowa, died at 1:40 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, of natural causes.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at Holy Ghost Church. Burial will be in Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Sherrill. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on Feb. 2, 1935, in Sherrill, on the family farm, son of Milton and Leona (Tigges) Puls. He attend grade school at Sherrill School.

He married Elizabeth "Betty" Wilke on Oct. 15, 1954, at Ss. Peter and Paul Church; she preceded him in death in 1981.

Merlin farmed in the Sherrill area until 1982. He then drove a milk truck for Marv Miller for several years and also drove for Breitbach Feeds.

He was a member of the Sherrill Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years.

Merlin was an avid NASCAR and local race fan and supported his son Dave's No. 66 late model class car from 1987 to 1994. He also enjoyed old tractors and even participated in a tractorcade a few years ago. Merlin was a very sociable guy and he looked forward to having breakfast at Jorga's with his friends.

Surviving are a son, David M. Puls, of Sherrill; a brother, Dale (Carol) Puls, of Sherrill; and a niece, Denise Puls, of Dubuque.

He also was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Betty.
