Bernice Schmidt Ede, 93, of 2470 Pennsylvania Ave., died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at the home of her daughter, Jody Noel, Dubuque.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

She was born on Oct. 29, 1909, in Dubuque, daughter of Gustav M. and Lena (Feyen) Meyer.

She married Joseph J. Schmidt on June 15, 1936; he died on May 24, 1965. She later married Alfred Ede on April 15, 1968; he died in May 1986.

She graduated from the former Immaculate Conception Academy in 1927, and was a member of the "Quill and Scroll" National Literary Honor Society.

Bernice was employed at the Catholic Daily Tribune until her marriage. Later she was employed at Roshek's Department Store for 15 years as merchandiser of the candy department. Bernice also worked for three years in the coffee shop at Mercy Hospital.

She was a member of St. Monica's Circle of the Catholic Mother's Study Club; a past president of St. Clara's Court 325; Catholic Order of Lady Foresters for 18 years, later joining St. Agatha's Court at St. Anthony's Parish, and their rosary society, St. Joseph's Circle, and the parish funeral choir. She also was a member of the ACCW, Order of St. Dominic Tertiary; Mercy Health Center Guild and Volunteer Services; Legion of Mary; Mercy Advantage; St. Columbkille's Senior Citizens; R.S.V.P.; Dubuque 62 Plus Club; Swing Club; and Tuesday Bridge Club.

Surviving are three sons, Richard E. (Shona) Schmidt, of Peachtree City, Ga., Robert G. (Marianne) Schmidt, Columbia Heights, Minn., and James C. (Gina) Schmidt, of Waunakee, Wis.; two daughters, Mrs. Langley (Mary) Wunderlich, of Huber Heights, Ohio, and Mrs. JoAnn "Jody" Noel, of Dubuque; two stepsons, Giles J. Ede and Allan F. Ede, both of Dubuque; two stepdaughters, Mary Nadine "Deanie" Shireman and Mrs. James (Bonita) Labee, both of Dubuque; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 27 step-grandchildren; 42 step-great-grandchildren; 14 step great great grandchildren: two brothers, Joseph T. (Virginia) Meyer and Edward G. (Dinah) Meyer; a step daughter-in-law, Gloria Ede

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Thomas, in childhood; an infant brother, Norbert Meyer; an infant sister, Mary Agnes Meyer; two brothers, TC Sgt. Gregory C. "Punch" Meyer, of the Air Force, who was lost in action in 1944; and Lester J. Meyer; two stepsons, the Rev. Alfred Juan Ede, Ph.D. and Edwin T. Ede.
