JoAnn Hunstad

JoAnn Hunstad, 80, of 723 Wilson Ave., died peacefully at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Behr's Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.

She was on born Aug. 4, 1928, in Dubuque, daughter of Ruben and Henrietta (Meyer) Birch. She was a graduate of Immaculate Conception Academy, class of 1946.

She married Robert A. Hunstad on Aug. 27, 1949, at Holy Ghost Church.

JoAnn worked as a telephone company operator. She was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church.

JoAnn enjoyed playing bingo, reading, knitting, crocheting and playing with her pets. She also enjoyed shopping for bargains only and bingo lottery tickets. She had an extensive bell collection. JoAnn and Robert traveled by car to 48 states. She will be remembered for her delicious apple pie baked in a brown paper bag. Her greatest joy was to be with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband, Robert Hunstad; seven children, Sara L. Smith, of Enterprise, Ala., David J. (Cheri) Hunstad, of Eldridge, Iowa, Beverly J. (Terry) Volkert and Janell M. (Kevin) Kotz, of Dubuque, Karen A. Huber, of Bettendorf, Iowa, Roberta "Robbie" (Dennis) McGraw, of Corona, Calif., and Paul J. (Marleen "Beany") Hunstad, of Dubuque; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Pat Birch, of Dubuque; and a brother-in-law, Irv Engler, of Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lindsey Marie Huber, in 1988; a great-granddaughter, MaKayla Davis; three sisters, Lucille (Herbert) Kelzer, Mary Engler and Barbara (Joseph) Dupont; two brothers, Le Roy (Rita) Birch and Leonard Birch; and a sister-in-law, Leona Birch.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Ave., Dubuque, IA 52001, and Hospice of Dubuque, 2255 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, IA 52002.

JoAnn's family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, Dr. Schultheis and staff, Wendt Regional Cancer Center and the doctors and staff of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Thank-you also to the Finley Hospital and cafeteria staff and their table of friends.
