MRS. CLARENCE "Mickey" (Adele R. Potter) GILLIGAN

Mrs. Clarence "Mickey" (Adele R.) Gilligan, 80, of 801 Davis St., Windsor Park, formerly of 320 Valeria St., died at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Sunnycrest Manor.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be the parish wake service at 4:30 p.m.

Mrs. Gilligan worked as an aide at Holy Family Hall for seven years.

She was born on March 18, 1922, in Dubuque, daughter of Byron L. and Myrtle (Wilkinson) Potter. She was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School. She married Clarence "Mickey" Gilligan on Jan. 16, 1947, at St. Raphael's Cathedral, Dubuque.

She served her country during World War II as the first woman from Dubuque to join the Coast Guard (SPARS). She served as the ship's cook. Adele was awarded the American Theater Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the 50th Anniversary Medal of the SPARS.

Adele was a member of St. Mary's Parish and the Snowflake Circle of the Rosary Society. She also was a member of the Power of Prayer and the Southend Club and the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6.

Adele and Mickey were "Mom and Dad" to so many, including Arlene, Marion and Heather, Maureen, Regina and Patrick and Craig and Julie.

Surviving are her husband, Clarence M. "Mickey" Gilligan; a daughter, Carol M. Gilligan, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; two sons, Michael J. Gilligan, of Dubuque, and Mark F. Gilligan, of Milwaukee; a sister, Myrtle Ribble, of Waterloo, Iowa; a brother, Raymond Potter, of Bernard, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Irma Potter, of Manchester, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Shirley Potter; and two brothers, Byron Potter and Leslie (Gloria) Potter.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque, 2255 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52002.
